Deutsch: „Das Wappen der Stadt Kamen enthält im goldenen Schild den märkischen Schachbalken. Dieser besteht aus drei waagerechten, rot-silbernen Querbalken von je sieben Feldern. Darüber befindet sich ein rotes Kammrad.“ Die korrekte Blasonierung lautet: :„In Gold (Gelb) ein in drei Reihen je sechsfach geteilter in Rot und Silber (Weiß) geschachter Balken, darüber ein rotes Kammrad.“ Seit 1912 führt die Stadt Kamen die vom Staat verordnete Wappenform. Die genaue Bedeutung des Kammrades ist nicht geklärt. Es könnte das Symbol der schon früh nachgewiesenen Mühle an der Seseke sein. Einige Theorien deuten es als Zeichen der westfälischen Feme (die es auch bei Kamen gab) oder als germanisches Sonnenrad. Der märkische Schachbalken als Zeichen der früheren Zugehörigkeit zur Grafschaft Mark wird von 14 märkischen Städten bzw. ehemaligen Städten geführt.
English: „Or a fess chequy Gules and Argent of three; in the chief a cog wheel gules.“ The arms were officially granted on December 16, 1912. Kamen received city rights in 1245 and the oldest seal is known from 1284. The seal showed a wheel below the chequered bar of the Counts of the Mark, who ruled the city at the time. The arms remained unchanged until the 17th century, when the wheel was placed above the bar.
