Deutsch: Das von Willy Lippert gezeichnete Wappen wurde am 29. Juni 1956 durch das Innenministerium des Landes Schleswig-Holstein verliehen, nachdem es bereits 1926 nach einem Entwurf von Otto Hupp vom preußischen Staatsministerium genemigt worden war. Es entstammt einem Siegel aus dem Jahre 1708, welches den Dreimaster mit gerefften Segeln, Heckflagge und Wimpeln mit der Umschrift "Incertum quo fata ferunt" (Ungewiss ist, wohin das Schicksal treibt.) zeigte. Der Stern steht für sichere Orientierung bei der seemännischen Navigation und gilt auch im Allgemeinen als positives Zeichen für die Entwicklung der Stadt.
English: The arms were last granted on June 29, 1956, first in 1926, designed by Otto Hupp. They are derived from a seal of 1708, but lightly changed with adding a star as sign for safe orientment on sea and developement oft the city. The motto means: "Its doubtful, where fate goads"
