Frontier's copyright statement reads: "The licence granted to third parties is a Creative Common Attribution ("CC BY") licence. Note that for articles published prior to July 2012, the licence may be different and you should check the pdf version of any article to establish what licence was granted." The article in question, published in 2011, reads: "This is an open-access article subject to a non-exclusive license between the authors and Frontiers Media SA, which permits use, distribution and reproduction in other forums, provided the original authors and source are credited and other Frontiers conditions are complied with." Therefore, the image is under CC-BY-3.0 (the version in effect as of 2011) or equivalent license.
