English: High Street For a small town New Romney still retains a reasonable selection of shops and services along its High Street. The town grew up during the Saxon period into a busy port at the mouth of the Rother. However, the tidal inlet gradually silted up so by 1258 ships could no longer navigate it and after a particularly violent storm in 1287 the shingle bar shifted closing the estuary for good and forcing the Rother to enter the sea near Rye. Unsuccessful attempts were made to shift the silt and shingle but to no avail and the town shrank in size and importance though it still remains the main centre of Romney Marsh.
