This plant was widely promoted by pastoralists as a bulky, drought tolerant cattle feed. It comes from the Mediterranean from a similar environment to Melbourne's. Its bulk and vigorous growth means it is capable of killing nearby indigenous vegetation, including native grasses and wildflowers. Along roadsides, the grass grows ungrazed and forms high fuel loads. During wildfires, these have proven capable of killing old gum trees that would normally have survived fires growing over native grasses."
